Government of India scheduled five tribal castes in 1967 under the ST list namely Tharu, Buksa, Bhotia, Jounsaaree and Rajee. In 2003, Government of India enlisted various castes under scheduled tribe in the state. As per census of 2011, total population of scheduled tribes is 1134273.
