History & Background
Government of India scheduled five tribal castes in 1967 under the ST list namely Tharu, Buksa, Bhotia, Jounsaaree and Rajee. In 2003, Government of India enlisted various castes under scheduled tribe in the state. As per census of 2011total population of scheduled tribes is 1134273.

Till 1984-85, various events/schemes for social, economic and educational development of scheduled tribes were being implemented by Social Welfare Department, presently all these schemes are being operated through Directorate for Tribal Development.
